What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is actually a prosthetic tooth root. It’s a very small titanium post that is placed into the jaw, where it then bonds with the surrounding bone through a natural process called osseointegration. From there, the implant can be topped with a variety of restorations (including a crown, bridge, or denture) to bring back the visible part of the tooth. Together, these replace both portions of a tooth, which no other treatment can accomplish.

Benefits of Dental Implants

By choosing to get dental implants, a patient also chooses to enjoy several benefits they simply can’t get with other treatments, such as:

  • Implanted teeth are held within the jawbone just like real ones, so patients can eat whatever they like without having to worry about annoying shifting or sliding.
  • Unlike regular dentures and bridges, dental implants do not have obvious metal attachments needed to keep them stable. Above the gum line, they look just like natural teeth, blending in with the rest of the smile.
  • Unlike a traditional dental bridge, there is no need to remove healthy neighboring dental structure to accommodate the placement of the new tooth or teeth with dental implants.
  • Dental implants are easy to keep clean in everyday life, with no complicated routines required.
  • Bone loss in the jaw is a common problem after tooth loss, but dental implants actually stop and can even reverse this process. This keeps the bone healthy so it can provide support for the facial muscles, leading to a healthier, more youthful appearance for the patient.
  • Dental implants are incredibly durable. With just regular brushing, flossing, and checkups, they can be trusted to last for 30+ years (the average lifespan for bridges and dentures is usually less than a decade).

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

One of the best parts about dental implants is that they can be used to replace practically any number of teeth. All a patient needs to bring to the table is decent oral health and a strong enough jawbone to support the new roots. If a patient is lacking either of these, our team can help to ensure they meet these requirements, which will guarantee the success of their treatment. Once a patient’s mouth is ready, we can help them choose which of the following implant procedures best fits their situation.

Missing Single Tooth

Replacing a single tooth with an implant is extremely conservative. A post is positioned within the jawbone, topped with a crown, and that’s it! Unlike with a bridge, the surrounding teeth aren’t affected at all, better preserving someone’s remaining dental structure.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Rather than placing an individual implant for each missing tooth, a more cost-effective method involves using just one or two implants to attach a bridge or partial denture directly to the jawbone, adding untold stability to these prosthetics while bringing back several teeth at once.

Missing All Teeth

For the highest level of comfort and reliability, patients missing all of their teeth along a single row can get an implant-retained denture. Just four to six implants are all that’s needed to support a prosthetic that looks great, fits comfortably, and provides a bite force much stronger than even the best removable denture.

How Dental Implants Work

The dental implant procedure can be broken down into two main phases: placement and restoration. For the surgical placement, you’ll be referred to a local specialist that has completed the treatment countless times before. Then, once your mouth has had time to heal, you’ll return to our office to have your new teeth attached to the roots. This team-based approach makes the implant process as smooth, comfortable, and predictable as possible, and it also ensures that a patient’s implants will endure for decades to come.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

In the world of dentistry, implants are widely considered to be the best investment thanks to their longevity. While they might cost more upfront compared to regular bridges and dentures, their durability means a patient will spend much less on maintaining their new teeth as the years go by, saving them thousands in most cases. What’s also important to know is that every dental implant treatment we provide is completely personalized based on a patient’s needs, so the price you pay will vary depending on factors such as how many implants you need, where they will be located, and which type of restoration they will support. We are committed to using the best materials possible so that you truly get your money's worth and can feel confident that your new smile will last.
